Wellcamp aviation graduate aims to be airline top gun

ONE of the first students enrolled in Wellcamp Airport's aviation training facility has received his commercial pilot's licence.

Toowoomba man Logan Norris registered at the Airline Academy of Australia in February and within 11 months he had a licence to fly.

Mr Norris said it was an awesome feeling knowing he had graduated.

"It's great; there is no more stress and for the moment no more exams," he said.

"Flying gives me such a good feeling.

"What I love most is knowing I have the freedom to go wherever I want.

"I'm looking to secure a commercial pilot job but if I can't get anything by March I will look at becoming an instructor here in Toowoomba."

The aviation course at Wellcamp Airport provides students with professional aircraft maintenance engineering training and students learn to fly in a designated aircraft alongside a team of world-class instructors.

Mr Norris was trained by flying instructor Troy Lane.

He spent about 200 hours in the sky during his course and also put his skills to the test using a flying simulator.

He said he had always wanted to be a pilot and was delighted when the training facility opened in Toowoomba.

"I was actually thinking of moving to Brisbane but being able to study and get my licence in my home town helped out a lot," he said.

"I felt much more comfortable studying at home and I didn't have the expenses of having to move to another city.

"I'd encourage anyone who wants their pilot licence to sign up in Toowoomba.

"Wellcamp is a great airport, it has a massive runway and it's nice and quiet at this stage, so most days you have the place to yourself which I think makes it easier to learn."

Mr Norris said his ultimate goal was to work for one of the big Australian airlines.

"I can't wait to fly an even bigger plane," he said.

"My ultimate goal is to work for Jetstar, Virgin or Qantas.

"I'll have to work my way up until I get there."
