Graduate slams CQU for offering 'pseudoscience degree'

A CQUNIVERSITY graduate has hit out at the university, after it was discovered the institution was offering chiropractic degrees.

The alumni, who wishes to remain anonymous, said they were disappointed at the undergraduate Bachelor of Science (Chiropractic) and postgraduate Master of Clinical Chiropractic degrees.

"I believe (chiropracty) in most parts is complete pseudoscience and is very accurately described as 'Alternative Medicine'," the graduate wrote in a letter to the editor this week.

"There have been many studies on the efficacy of chiropractic treatments and the evidence it does anything at all is tenuous at best."

The graduate used evidence from Edzard Ernst's student, in which it is said the practice of chiropractic medicine was only beneficial for back pain.

"Perhaps I would have less of an issue with these courses if I could be assured that the graduates of CQ University's program would stick to treating back pain," they said.

"However, given recent news reports that clearly show the Chiropractic Board of Australia is either unable or unwilling to rein in their members from quackery such as treating colic in a newborn baby with spinal manipulation, I remain sceptical.

"Ultimately I feel that CQ University offering this course devalues my degree, and the degrees that all CQ University alumni have worked so hard to achieve.

"I'd encourage anyone considering these courses to perhaps investigate the Bachelor of Physiotherapy course offered by the university instead.

"Finally, I truly hope that I will not be reading about the latest Crystal Healing and Clairvoyance degrees the university has decided to offer in coming years."
