Grand finalists to meet in TRL match of the day

RUGBY LEAGUE: Coach Craig Mullaly plans to stick with his plan to play last season's fullback Craig Donn in the second row for the TRL season opener against Pittsworth at Father Ranger Oval at 2.30pm on Sunday.

The game will pit last season's grand finalists against each other in round one.

Pittsworth won last season's grand final 18-12 as Warwick almost scored in the final minute of play.

Other than five-eighth Ryan McIvor, Warwick has all its backline from last season available while there are a number of forwards out due to transfers, overseas trips and movements to other clubs.

Donn has been moved to the pack with last year's captain and centre Dylan Galloway playing at fullback, a position he also filled for Norths in Queensland Cup league.

Brodie Quirk has moved from the wing to centre to cover for Galloway and Mitch Watson will play on the wing in his first season of A-grade.

New recruit Dion Galloway had a massive game against his old team Killarney in a 42-4 victory in the Xylon Smith Memorial Shield game on Saturday.

He will play in the back row with Darren Pettiford and Lachlan Palmer likely to play up front.

Mitch McMahon has started hooker in each game this season.

"Mitch has settled into hooker pretty well where his defence and ball distribution is good,” Mullaly said.

The Cowboys will be boosted in round three when Mick Bloomfield returns from suspension which will make a massive difference to the Warwick pack.

"Mick has hardly missed a training run and will definitely be one of our forward leaders,” Bloomfield said.

Mullaly isn't a coach who wakes up at night thinking about the opposition for the weekend game.

As for Pittsworth on Sunday, Mullaly said despite the loss of some players, Pittsworth still had their classy halves combination of James Dempsey and Thomas O'Sullivan.

"Pittsworth second rower Daniel York will be one of the leaders in their forward pack with the move of Mitchell Carpenter to the Jets and the retirement of Matthew Briggs.”

There is a lot of tradition in games between Warwick and Pittsworth. The Cowboys won against Pittsworth in the 1987 A-grade grand final to secure the club's first premiership in the top grade.

There will be four games on Sunday at Father Ranger Oval. The first game is at 10.10am when Warwick plays Pittsworth in second division.

The Cowboys' most capped player David Hallman is coach for second division and is odds on to lead the tackle count.

Last season, Warwick won the club championship for most competition points in U18, reserve and A-grades.
