WIRAC grandstand bill totals $42,000

PLANS to repair the crack in the underside of the WIRAC grandstand and install a monorail crane system in the pump room will cost the Southern Downs Regional Council $42,000.

The grandstand at the indoor recreation and acquatic centre has been closed since the crack was discovered by a specialist engineering company in May.

At the time the engineers were investigating how to go about installing a monorail crane system in the pump room, which will be used to transport pumps from the plant room to ground level.

The closure of the centre's grandstand created issues for all those who used the pool, particularly during school swimming carnivals and learn to swim lessons.

Seven months after the crack was found a report detailing the costs is ready to be presented to the regional council.

The first $30,000 needed for the project was expected to be taken from the WIRAC building improvements fund, with the remainder likely to come from funds left over from the Stanthorpe Pool, YMCA and Weeroona Park public toilet upgrades.

Once the repairs are completed and the monorail crane system is installed, the grandstand will be re-opened.

But no time frame on the construction and repair was given in the report.

The council will decide at tomorrow's general meeting if the funds can be reallocated.
