Granite Belt still in weather warning area

UPDATE, 3.30PM: HEAVY rainfall continues to be forecast for the Warwick and Stanthorpe and surrounding districts as Cyclone Marcia continues to move southward.

Residents in outlying parts of the Warwick area including Maryvale, Goomburra, upper Emu Vale and the Condamine Gorge above Killarney have been warned by the Southern Downs Regional Council they could become isolated if local roads are cut.

Falls of up nearly 50mm were recorded in the 24 hours to 9am today around our region, with the heaviest falls since then concentrated in areas to the east of Warwick, in particular above Killarney on the range at The Head and Carrs Lookout.

As Marcia moves south there is still the chance of continued heavy falls and localised flash flooding this afternoon, tonight and tomorrow.

There remains the chance of a thunderstorm tonight for the Southern Downs and Granite Belt and winds of up to 45kmh.

Southern Downs and Granite Belt residents are urged to secure their properties in the event of damaging rainfall and winds and to exercise extreme caution in the event of any localised flash flooding in the next 48 hours.

EARLIER: SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council is on a higher level watching brief today now that Cyclone Marcia has crossed the Capricornia coast and travelling southwards.

Council's Local Disaster Co-ordinator Peter See said the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG), made up of

Council and emergency services representatives, had met this morning and now were on alert but not fully activated.

"There is no reported major flooding at this stage on the Southern Downs and the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) have advised of light to moderate rainfall in parts of the Condamine catchment and also in parts of the Quart Pot Creek catchment.

"As most people would know the major impact from Cyclone Marcia is in Central Queensland and we are experiencing rainfall as a result.

"Any further affects for the Southern Downs will depend on the movement of the cyclone in the coming hours and overnight.

"We will keep residents informed and we also ask that everyone listens to ABC radio for the most up to date information as well as checking the BOM website.

"If people are having issues with stormwater run-off they can contact Council on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).

"Council is well prepared - as this weather event is heading into the weekend we have staff members on stand-by just in case and have met with SES representatives yesterday to discuss possible flood risk areas and resourcing," he said.

Mr See again asked residents in local valley areas to prepare for potential weather affects as a result of the cyclone.

"Just to repeat yesterday's message Council is asking residents in the Goomburra Valley, Maryvale Northbranch Road, Swanfels Road, Emu Creek Road and Condamine Gorge to prepare for flooding and potentially to be isolated.

"Our valley areas are most at risk so we would ask residents to complete their usual preparations of bringing animals to higher ground, ensuring they have enough food and water and keeping updated with BOM alerts.

"We cannot stress enough that if there is flooding as a result of this weather event in our region to not drive into any flood water.

"For flood enquiries relating to state roads the public should ring 131940 or go to the web site 131940.qld.gov.au. For local roads call Council on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372) but please be aware that depending on the severity of the event it can take time for council crews to get around and appropriately sign road closures," he said.
