Greens leader hits out at US alliance

GREENS leader Richard Di Natale has hit out at Australia's alliance with the US, saying it risks putting our nation in the middle of a "proxy war" between America and China.

During a speech at the Lowy Institute yesterday, he labelled the Turnbull government's decision to invest $50 billion in 12 new submarines as joining a military "arms race" and "interceding in a South China Sea proxy war between two of our largest trading partners".

Sen Di Natale also said the long-standing diplomatic alliance had made Australia complicit in "the terrible consequences of US foreign policy".

The US has asked Australia to join freedom of navigation exercises in the South China Sea, but Australia has not yet accepted, pending the outcome of a court case over islands in the sea.

Sen Di Natale also criticised Australia's role in the Middle East against Islamic State, saying the nation was following the US into another conflict "with no clear strategic objective".
