Greens prepare 'policy for young people'

A MINISTER for Youth and a $50-a-week rise to the Youth Allowance were two key measures under a "policy for young people" announced by The Greens on Thursday.

The policy aims to provide more support for Australia's youth, by increasing rental support and establishing an official youth parliament.

South Australian Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said the policy showed the minor party was "standing up for young people".

A central initiative was the creation of a cabinet-level youth minister to advocate for young people at the highest political level.

Sen Hanson-Young said the policy also aimed to create 20,000 new student rentals under an expansion of existing rental assistance programs.

The youth policy also would reverse a recent $2.3 billion cut to university funds, and increase funding for the sector by 10%.
