Greg's hard yakka for club awarded

GREG McDonald reckons work will be finished by Christmas in the Warwick Hockey Association re-build at Queens Park.

This season, McDonald was surprised to be named Martin Brodrick Memorial Player of the Year winner for contributions on and off the field.

He won one of the five major trophies along with ladies player of the year Toni Cox, best and fairest winners Tamara Hawks and Peter Andrews, and association person of the year Phil Rolfe.

McDonald's on-field play helped his team Harlequins make the grand final.

As a player, McDonald played junior and Coulter Shield games for Warwick before the 1976 flood washed away the clubhouse.

He debuted in seniors at the age of 14 before moving to Brisbane in 1986 and 1987, where he won two A-grade premierships with South-West United under coach Greg Browning.

He made a Brisbane indoor hockey representative team when living in the capital city.

Back home in Warwick, he made his first state team in 2001 when he was captain-coach of the Queensland 3 side in over 40s.

Off the field, he has played a major role in re-building facilities after the floods of December 2010 and January 2011.

After the flood, he was spending 20 hours a week at the grounds but now is back to five hours a week.

The facilities were up to scratch for state championships mid-year but there is still some electrical work to do, and the grass on the levy needs to be established as quickly as possible.

As the flood levy was being built, McDonald, a qualified electrician, was heading to the grounds after work each day to lay cable under the levy.

He has replaced four of the electrical control boxes at Queens Park, all as a volunteer, and has one to go.

McDonald wired the new technical bench and dug outs and put the main switchboard 1.6m off the ground, above the record flood level.

"We are definitely more flood proof. The new surface is totally glued and flood water will only get in from the back (unless a flood not seen in Warwick hits Queens Park)," he said.

"We have been advised floodwater flowing in from the back (beside the clubhouse) will create some air pockets on the surface, which will be easily fixable."

McDonald will play for his work team, Ensbey Electrical, in the mixed social summer competition.
