Gremlins must tick boxes in TRL bid

TOOWOOMBA Rugby League chairman Paul Dean says he is hoping to get proceedings under way in the near future with Stanthorpe's bid to join the Toowoomba Rugby League next season.

As reported in the Daily News last Friday, the Gremlins have applied to leave the Border Rugby League and play in the TRL next season.

Dean said representatives, including himself, would visit Stanthorpe to get the process under way.

"The first thing that needs to happen is Stanthorpe must get permission to leave the Border Rugby League," Dean said.

"So what will happen is we will go down to Stanthorpe and begin a series of processes.

"Those processes include looking at the club financially, looking at player numbers and looking at the number of teams in the area, because to play in the TRL you have to be able to field an A grade team, a reserves team and an under-18s team.

"Although it's not as important as the first three, we'll also look at the playing roster they have in mind."

Dean said he could not give a timeframe on when an answer could be expected.

"We're currently putting the processes in place," he said.

"When we've done that we'll call a special board meeting. We're trying to get down to Stanthorpe for their annual general meeting and find out where they're situated."

Dean said the Central Division, run by the Queensland Rugby League, would have the final call.

"The Central Division wants to ensure each region is strong," Dean said.

"Stanthorpe has applied for affiliation with the TRL and then once the decision is made, an appeal would go to the next level, which is the Central Division - who has the final say."
