Greymare rider going for glory in APRA national finals
RODEO: The Warwick area will have two riders it can claim as local when the bareback riders jump on their horses in the rounds of the Warwick Rodeo APRA National Finals this weekend.
Ryan Zadow, of Greymare, has qualified 15th in the bareback and is competing in his first national finals in the APRA, while former Gore rider Fred Osman is ranked third.
Zadow has competed in the bareback bronc ride for the past five years.
He was third in the St Brendan's Yeppoon Rodeo in the APRA in September after recording a fourth earlier in the year at Roma on well-known horse Little Egypt, from the Gill Brothers string.
"My wife Helena and three children come first so I only go to rodeos when work commitments allow,” he said.
"I like the adrenaline rush of bareback riding. I rode bulls years ago when I was younger.”
At age 34, he still has plenty of years of bareback riding to come.
"I would be happy to just place in one of the rounds this week,” he said.
He is in form after winning the bareback at last weekend's Lismore Show Rodeo in the National Rodeo Association with a score of 70.
Zadow recalls his best ride was 75 on Diamintina two years ago at Kenilworth when he came second behind Dinny Moran, who has also qualified for the bareback finals, which go to Sunday afternoon. Rounds at 6pm Friday and Saturday and 2pm Sunday with second-division and junior rodeo events earlier in the day on Saturday and Sunday.
