Appeal to help crash victims' grieving families

GRIEVING families of Southern Downs crash victims Jeff Croft and Mark Ciufici are being offered hope and support from their small community.

Mr Croft, 44 and Mr Ciufici, 57, both of Thulimbah, were killed on September 5 when their car crashed into a light pole on the New England Hwy at The Summit, north of Stanthorpe.

Stanthorpe Community Op Shop director Debbie Lightfoot-De Hamer has since organised an appeal to help Mr Croft's and Mr Ciufici's families.

Her colleague Caron Hopkins, who is secretary of the op shop, yesterday said Mr Croft's wife Leanne was a long-term volunteer at the store.

Ms Hopkins said Mr Croft had been the breadwinner for his family of five children.

"Day to day stuff she is really struggling with," Ms Hopkins said.

"Because she is a part of our family here at the shop we are doing as much as we can to help out."

She said the tragedy had been compounded by the fact Mr Croft was next month due to marry his partner of 26 years.

"All of a sudden he has a car accident and he is no longer around.

The appeal for groceries and other donations is also planned to benefit Mr Ciufici's family.

"The families are extremely close."

Anyone wishing to help can visit The Stanthorpe Community Op Shop in Railway St, Stanthorpe or call Debbie Lightfoot-De Hamer on 4681 3836 or 0401 856 967.

Donations can also be made at ANZ Bank into Account Name: The Jeff Croft and Mark Ciufici Memorial Fund, BSB: 014 711, Account Number: 21 619 6161.
