Gross and Butler bat team to victory at Aus Day carnival

CRICKET: The rules are the same in the T20 Big Bash as the Condamine Sports Club Australia Day Cricket Carnival in Warwick - score 150 batting first and you are in the game with a chance.

The Stunned Mullets won last year and went into this year's carnival aiming for their fifth overall win.

In the final, Lachlan Gross opened the batting and was there at the end scoring 78 in 5-168.

He received best support from Dean Butler who made 43, including six fours.

Once Butler was out, Toowoomba young gun Kane Bradford supported Gross to take Stunned Mullets to a more than defendable score.

As is always the case, Dave Duroux was economical with the ball taking 1-13 off four overs for Marbuck's XI.

Marbuck's were in their first final and at the half-way mark were 4-63. Keegan Hooper hit two sixes over midwicket and would have been a threat to Stunned Mullets but he was dismissed for 20.

While Shane Hooper was at the wicket, anything was possible and a six by Shane into a Wood St backyard was a reminder to Stunned Mullets they couldn't afford to relax.

Marbuck's XI needed 82 off six overs and then 67 off four and finally a virtually impossible 51 off two.

The batsmen at the crease did not give up and Shane hit successive sixes in the last over before Dave Duroux took strike and hit a four behind square leg.

In the end, Marbuck's scored 21 off the final over to go down by 29.

While there were plenty of top performances at the weekend, one that stood out was bowling of 6-7 by Paul Raumer for Rettke's XI against Jonesy's XI.

One of the features of Saturday's games was a six off the last ball of a match by Andrew Ryan for Hulk's XI.

Batting first, Lowes XI set up a great match with a score of 211 on the back of a century from Adam May.

In reply, Hulk's needed 11 runs of the last over which was bowled by Adam May and secured the win when Ryan hit a six off the last ball.

There were two centuries in the game on Saturday between Hugh's XI and Lowes XI.

Glen Roche scored 100 for Hugh's XI, his first century since he scored two in warehouse cricket in Brisbane two decades ago. Matt May was the second family member to score a century on day one, blasting a hundred for Lowes XI.
