Guilty plea for attack on off-duty cop at his home
A YOUNG mother spent one Tuesday night in January getting drunk before menacing an off-duty police officer at his home and punching him in the face.
Sasha Leigh Harmond was part of a group that went to the policeman's home on January 29, where they threw a rock at the officer's car and kicked in his fence, before Harmond approached him and punched him in the face.
When police arrived to assist the victim, the 21-year-old had to be restrained and thrashed her arms in an attempt to hit the victim again.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Ken Wiggan asked Magistrate Graham Lee to impose a tough sentence for the attack.
He said the offending was particularly serious, as she targeted the officer at his private family home.
"She went over to the (police officer) and punched him with a clenched fist to the side of the face - unprovoked," Sgt Wiggan said.
"They have come to his residence and damaged his property for no reason.
"This was totally unprovoked and an example needs to be made of this woman."
She denied knowing the victim was a police officer.
Solicitor Phillip Crook told the court his client did not escape unscathed and received a busted lip and tooth.
When questioned as to where Harmond's children were on the evening of the attack, Mr Crook said they were in the care of Harmond's mother so she could have a night out.
Harmond spent about an hour in the cells on Tuesday while Magistrate Graham Lee compiled her sentence.
When she returned to the courtroom, Mr Lee had some scathing words for the mother of three.
"You should be really ashamed of yourself - you are the mother of three young children," Mr Lee said.
He sentenced her to one month jail, suspended for six months, and fined her $300.
Harmond's boyfriend has also been charged over the incident and will appear in the court at a later date.
