Gundy player wanted a Blues win and starring Lowe effort

RUGBY LEAGUE: Oscar Vukovick hails from Goondiwindi in Queensland but is a Blues fan when it comes to Origin.

He was sure the game was going to golden point on Wednesday before James Tedesco scored the winning try in the State of Origin decider.

With Macintyre players from Tenterfield to Pittsworth and all towns in between, the Macintyre team in the under-43kg rugby league carnival in Clifton this week had players barracking for the Blues and Maroons.

Edward Palfreyman was born in Cairns which makes him a Maroons supporter even though he now lives on the southern side of the border at Tenterfield.

"It was good the Maroons came back from 20-8 to level the scores.”

Oscar said the Blues played the better and deserved to win.

"It was good to watch Tom Trbojevic in action for the Blues,” he said.

Oscar has met Queensland debutante Ethan Lowe and said he went well for Queensland. Lowe played junior rugby league for Goondiwindi in the Warwick and District Junior Rugby League competition.

When the score was 20-18 to New South Wales and Lowe was going for goal from a wide angle, Oscar said he wanted the Blues to win but also wanted the player from Goondiwindi to land the conversion.

"I wanted Ethan to show what Goondiwindi could do and he did by landing the goal,” he said.

"Ethan's goalkicking was awesome. My parents know his parents.”

This week, Oscar and Edward are playing for Macintyre in the zone carnival.

Edward is dummy half or second row after predominately playing halfback for the Tenterfield Tigers in Warwick and District footy.

Oscar is prop for Macintyre at this year's carnival after playing dummy half and second row in club footy for Goondiwindi.

As for their favourite players, the pair go for a player from their own state. Cameron Munster is the favourite for Edward and James Maloney gets the nod from Oscar.

Players from the Southern Downs have participated in five different rugby league carnivals during the school holidays. Many have played in Darling Downs teams at state carnivals while others have played in under-35kg footy at Cunnamulla and under-43kg footy at Clifton. Club fixtures return on July 20.
