Gunners splash cash in big way

FOOTBALL: Arsenal smashed its club transfer record yesterday when it signed German playmaker Mesut Ozil (pictured), from Real Madrid, for $A73 million during a crazy last hour before the transfer window closed.

The fee easily eclipsed the previous high of $A25 million the Gunners paid for Russian Andriy Arshavin in 2009.

Elsewhere, Belgian international midfielder Marouane Fellaini's late move from Everton to Manchester United for $A47 million meant the total gross spend by EPL clubs from July 1 until yesterday topped $A1 billion - beating the previous high of $A830 million.

United missed out on Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera, and bizarre reports from Spain said the move collapsed after three impostors claiming to represent the club found their way into the Spanish league offices.

Top-of-the-ladder Liverpool signed defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori, from Paris Saint-Germain and Sporting Lisbon respectively, and Victor Moses arrived on loan from Chelsea.

Everton also adds three new faces to its squad - James McCarthy, Romelu Lukaku and Gareth Barry.
