Gunshots shake town

LEGUME was still and silent at 10.30am yesterday morning despite the fact, just hours earlier, piercing gunshots reverberated from the local shop.

Police investigators from Casino were the only sign of life at the centre of the small township yesterday.

"It's too soon, it's just too soon," a nervous-looking shop owner told the Daily News when asked to comment on the incident. Legume, like so many tiny settlements scattered along the Mt Lindsay Hwy among the rolling hills, is a stranger to crime.

A police spokesman confirmed at 4.30am there was a report of several shots fired from a low-velocity fire arm. "No-one was injured and the only damage was to the rear door of the premises," he said.

The officer confirmed nothing was stolen from the shop as entry was denied.
