Gusts, heat increase fire danger
GUSTY north-westerly winds will bring hot temperatures and very high to severe fire warnings across the Southern Downs region for the remainder of this week.
Queensland Fire and Rescue service south-western region manager for rural operations Wayne Waltisbuhl said conditions were worsening in the Maranoa district as well as in the Channel Country and Warrego district.
"The fire danger ratings are ranging from very high to severe in these areas, with high temperatures, strong winds and dry conditions expected," he said.
"We are asking people to ensure they don't throw cigarette butts out of car windows."
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Rick Threlfall said today would be mostly sunny with a top of 26 degrees.
"The temperature will continue to increase to 27-28 degrees (tomorrow)," he said.
"There are north-westerly winds around which is why it is so warm. Winds will reach speeds of up to 20-25kmh."
Mr Threlfall said there was a slim chance of a shower and afternoon thunderstorm tomorrow.
"There will be a trough moving through (tomorrow) afternoon, bringing cooler air," he said.
"The winds will get up to 30-35kmh on the weekend."
