Gym cash stealer on probation order

A GYM user who fleeced her fellow fitness friends out of hundreds of dollars during a periodic stealing spree has been placed on probation.

Swanfels woman Valerie Anne Fischer appeared in Warwick Magistrates court yesterday, where she pleaded guilty to a total of five stealing charges and one charge of attempted stealing.

The court heard the 50-year-old aged care nurse targeted other women while they were working out and pocketed cash from the wallets of her victims.

The first offence took place on September 14, where Fischer's first victim had a total of $100 taken out of her wallet while she was at the gym.

Shortly after leaving, the victim went to purchase groceries and noticed her cash was missing from her wallet.

She later made a complaint to the gym.

About two weeks later, Fischer targeted the next woman and took $220 out of her wallet while she used the gym.

Again, the victim noticed the money was gone when she went shopping after her workout and discovered her wallet was empty.

Then, on October 6, a woman noticed $20 missing from her wallet after a session.

A subsequent search revealed a $20 note in Fischer's wallet, which was identified as being the stolen one through the serial number.

In another incident, managers of the gym caught Fischer rummaging through the items contained in another gym-goer's locker.

The court heard management suspected Fischer was stealing property and struck up a conversation with her as a distraction.

Fischer left the gym shortly after and nothing was found to be missing at that time.

Defence lawyer for Fischer said the acts were out of character for the woman and she had since paid back $800.

He added the mother of two had worked as a registered nurse at a local aged care facility for the past 14 years and was going through financial difficulty at the time.

Acting Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist acknowledged that recording a conviction against the nurse could have dire consequences for her employment situation.

Fischer - who had no prior criminal history - was placed on 12 months probation.
