Gym discount to give youth healthy minds and bodies
IN A bid to build healthy minds and bodies in the Rose City, headspace Warwick and Voyage Fitness have joined forces to offer youths affordable access to the gym to let off a bit of steam and get active.
A plan to join forces with Voyage Fitness by offering $10/week membership to the gym has been something headspace Warwick manager Sophia McLucas had been thinking about for a while.
"There's been a lot of research done into the links between good physical health and good mental health," she said.
"If we can provide good physical health, we can have good mental health and vice-versa.
"It's all about keeping active and staying well - mentally and physically."
For Voyage Fitness manager Jaron Cumerford coming on board with headspace was a great incentive for the gym, which regularly had groups of headspace clients come in for training sessions.
Mr Cumerford said Simon Young, from headspace, regularly brought youths to the gym to train.
"The problem is once they start they don't often continue," he said.
"With this deal for $10, they can basically do whatever they want.
"They can do group fitness classes, get a 24 hour token and meet with a trainer."
In his time working at the Palmerin St gym, Mr Cumerford said he had seen first hand the benefits of physical activity for mental health.
"We have so many people come in who start training after something big happens in their life," he said.
"Six months down the track, they're a new person - we see it every day."
For existing headspace clients the journey to a new and healthier self is pretty simple.
"Get a note from us, bring it down to Voyage Fitness and sign up," Mrs McLucas said.
"Hopefully it'll all start helping."
Headspace services are open to people aged 12-25 years.
