Gympie eventer analyses his ride to victory in Warwick
EVENTING: Gympie rider Brett Cantle has a perfect record on Premonition at the Warwick Horse Trials complex at Morgan Park.
At the weekend, he won the Inglewood Quarries One-day Event two-star on Premonition, a stallion owned by Lara and Madonna Hedberg from Cooroy.
What did you score? I scored 54 penalty points on Premonition to win by eight points from Kalbar rider Matt Gaske on Thymes Too.
What are your dressage score first up? I scored 46 on Premonition and Matt scored 48.
How did you go in showjumping? Matt had a rail down in showjumping. I went clear on Premonition and Mattea Davidson also went clear on APH Charlie Brown.
How did the cross country go? Most riders went clear but everyone had time penalties due to the ground being a bit firm this time of the year. We don't overdo the speed to save the legs of the horses. The cross country course was a true test of the ability of each horse and rider.
What does a score of 54 means to you? It is a qualifier for the Queensland elite squad which is recognition for the rider and horse.
How long until you go up to three star? Our plan is to go three star at Tamborine in a month.
What about the Olympics? You never say never but the big goal is to just up-skill.
How did your daughter Isabelle go? She competed in her first Warwick event and ended up midfield in the 60cm class. She finished with a smile and gave the horse a pat at the end which is all you want as a parent.
How does her efforts rate with your own performance? I got just as much of a thrill out of watching Isabelle as I did out of my win.
Was it a long drive home after the Warwick weekend? If you do well, it is not a long drive home but if you don't, it is a long drive home.
Do you take any short cuts? With horses and a float, it is best to go through Brisbane.
