Bundy boat to become Black Pearl in next Pirates movie

KIT Woodward spent 10 years building his dream ship in Bundaberg and has taken it on many adventures throughout the world - but its next adventure will be the biggest of all.

The Rainbow Gypsy is soon to be transformed at the Gold Coast in preparation for its lead role as the Black Pearl in the fifth instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean blockbuster franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales, to be filmed in Queensland.

Mr Woodward said the sale of the replica 1897 Scottish trawler fell into place after film makers were desperately searching for the perfect ship.

After many years of charity work, Mr Woodward said he was happy to let The Rainbow Gypsy go.

"She has definitely had her fair share of exciting voyages over the last few years," he said.

"I used her for trips to the Solomon Islands where we would drop off medical equipment and aid supplies."

"The islanders will definitely miss her but it is time to move on to something a little different."

The beautiful ship, which is 74 foot in length, is not the first of its kind.

"The Rainbow Gypsy is actually a replica of an old ship I used to own," Mr Woodward said. "I spent a long time sailing the seas and my two kids grew up on the ship so it definitely held a special place in my heart."

Mr Woodward, who is a tallship sailor, has spent much of his life out on the open ocean with experience on many ships including Captain Cook's Endeavour.

He has been putting his skills to the test during the past five weeks while working on the Pirates of the Caribbean set as a ship rigger.

"Basically it is my job to make sure the rigging gear for each ship is in working order as well as the sails," he said.

The Rainbow Gypsy will join its fleet at the marina on the Gold Coast this weekend where it will be hidden away under lock and key until the makeover is complete.

"The ship will be given a new mast, new deck, and paint job along with anything else that the movie makers see fit," Mr Woodward said.

"The next time anyone sees her, she will be completely transformed into the Black Pearl."
