Hairdresser sets out on English adventure

LONDON Fashion Week is calling Warwick hairdresser Jessica Carey of JC's Inspirational Hair.

After four years at her salon in the Warwick CBD and four months at her chic home studio, Jessica has decided to holster her hairdryer in Australia to pursue her career further afield.

"I will be leaving for London on July 4 to backpack for three months and then work at a salon in Soho, London," she said.

"The plan is to eventually work at London Fashion Week."

With a one-way ticket, Jessica will keep up her styling skills as she travels, using haircuts to barter for accommodation while on the road.

"I think there will be plenty of business at backpackers' (hostels), and wherever I go, I have read on the internet you can sometimes swap accommodation for a haircut," she said, with an adventurous glint in her eye.

Though this trip has been a dream of Jessica's since she was a small girl, the young businesswoman said she would miss the close relationships she had built with her clients.

"I have always felt this job was about making people feel good," she said.

"Too many people doubt themselves. I want to inspire people every day to do what they want to do."

The 23-year-old had grown so close to her loyal clients, she wrote each of them a letter before she left.

"We are also having a few drinks up here this week so I can say goodbye," she said.

Constantly inspired by hair creations online, Jessica said she kept a scrapbook of ideas to help build on her dreams.

"It's hard to be focused and driven at this age, but I was lucky to figure out what I wanted to do early," she said.

"I think all the work is worth it in the long term, and now it is time for the next step.

"I can't teach myself anything else here, so I need to go there to learn more and to keep achieving."

While the next stop is London, Jessica assures this will not be the last we will see of her.

"I'm sure I'll be back. I love Warwick. It's my home," she said.
