Ben Hall takes out Canning Downs campdraft prize
CANNING Downs Campdraft veteran Ben Hall took out the draft's coveted top gong riding to a three-round score of 265 on horse Eltorrio yesterday.
Judge Wayne Dennien from Proston, who has been judging since the late 1980s, said the performance of the riders in the finals was truly worthy of a final.
"They all wanted to win, after beating out 849 competitors from the first round, whoever gets here wants to win," he told the Daily News.
"The quality of the riders and stock was very good, in the end Ben got around the pegs the best.
"I was looking for riders to be attacking pegs and to shorten their cattle up."
First cab off the rank was Lucy Sellers who rode Walleroo Asha to score of 81 making her final three round score 252.
David Thorn, the eventual third place-getter, was next on riding Hazelwood Dex.
Thorn scored 90 in the final, taking his overall score to 262.
Wally Rea on Miss Elly, who placed fifth overall, was the leader heading into the second round with a two-round score of 177 but was unable to hang on to the top spot, with a total of 261.
First place getter Ben Hall from Mundubbera qualified for the second round yesterday with two horses.
He first came out with Oaks Zena taking an early lead with a total score of 263.
Hall's winning run though was on Eltorria who he has been drafting for just 18 months with a score of 265, beating both his own 263-point run and that of second place-getter Craig Radke.
