Hamper load of happiness
THEY travelled in convoys, delivering trailer after trailer of food, hay, toiletries and love to those who needed it the most.
For the Community Disaster Relief Van volunteers who headed to Longreach late last week, there was nothing more gratifying than seeing how they could help struggling farmers first hand.
Out of their own pockets, eight car, truck and ute loads of volunteers delivered the thoughts, prayers and donations of Warwick residents to hundreds of people doing it tough.
Some were greeted with pure emotion, others were told there was someone else needing it more, but all the farmers expressed nothing but gratitude for what had been donated.
One farmer, who didn't wish to be named, said it was like Christmas - and told the CDRV team she would wait to open her hampers with her family.
A total of 95 properties were delivered to, with eight different runs completed to areas up to two hours out of Longreach.
CDRV board member Amanda Nothdurft, who was among the team who drove to Longreach, said the delivery went very well.
"We've raised $27,000 which will be distributed out there this week," she said.
"Every family was very accepting of the boxes of food and chats over a cuppa.
"We've had lots of calls saying thankyou from graziers, particularly those who weren't home when the boxes were delivered."
The help doesn't stop here though for the CDRV team, who will do another run of food hampers and other goods next school holidays.
"We're still asking people to fill up boxes of food for us to take out," Mrs Nothdurft said.
"They also need as much money as they can out there, plus donations of hay and stock feed."
The hay is going out to farmers faster than it is coming in to be stored at Kirsten Forrest's property Oakley, just outside Longreach.
"So far the CDRV deliveries have helped 47 families with hay and chaff," she said.
"There's 30 more on the waiting list - all within a 300km radius of Longreach."
