Hard work restores Cambanoora Gorge
VOLUNTEERS have come together to fix up sections of the Cambanoora Gorge, which were damaged by vandals last week.
As reported in last week's Warwick Daily News, a group of four-wheel drives ripped up parts of the stunning landscape after the New Year's rain.
Damaged in the vandalism spree were life-sized corrugated iron cows which were made and installed by a property owner to stop people driving on the wet areas next to the clearly-marked dirt road.
The picnic area beside the picturesque Bullocky Crossing was also targeted.
On Saturday, a group of volunteers - comprising members of the Cambanoora Gorge Management Project and the Killarney and District Historical Society - spent more than five hours cleaning up the mess left, and ensuring the same acts cannot happen again.
The group has installed large logs blocking entry points to particular areas where the group hooned, as well as inserting concrete boulders to stop people gaining entry into another area which has previously been targeted.
Plants which were ruined as a result of the vandal's actions were also re-planted.
Cambanoora Gorge Management Project vice president Ivan Davison said he hoped the changes would keep vandals away.
"(Killarney and District Historical Society president) Tony Pearson has kindly donated his bobcat to help us," Mr Davison said.
"Our objective is to stop the vandals driving into the Flaggy Creek Crossing area.
"Tony's Bobcat has allowed us to move some piles of dirt, some logs and some boulders into particular positions to stop people from going into the areas that were damaged by the vandals."
Mr Davison said he was at a loss as to why anyone would want to damage the gorge.
"It's a shame when people come through the area and leave a mess behind them," he said.
"It's such a nice area and I don't understand why anyone would want to damage it."
The group is also hoping to get new signage approved by council.
