Hats off to the volunteers at Morgan Park
MOTORSPORT: The Warwick District Sporting Car Club expects a crowd of 10,000 to be in Warwick for the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championships at Morgan Park.
Club committee member Wayne Pfingst said volunteers had been working hard to prepare for the superbike weekend on August 25-27.
Maintenance has included sandblasting, repainting and placing new timber steps on the bridge across the raceway.
Regular Morgan Park race driver Jason O'Mara stepped up to help the regular volunteers with work on a bridge which was sourced from the Sydney Olympic site and placed across the track near the top of the hill.
Pfingst said three food vendors would be operating from the area near the bridge on superbike weekend.
"We will have spectators on both sides of the track at the bridge,” he said.
"I pay tribute to four volunteers, Darryl O'Donnell, Dan Collins, Graham Hodges and Peter Shroud, who work around the raceway between one and four days a week.”
Peter Herlihen is a club volunteer and chief scrutineer at many meetings after moving to the Warwick area due to its proximity to Morgan Park.
"I build racing cars for a living,” he said.
"Morgan Park brings a lot of people to Warwick. There are 110 to 130 drivers at Morgan Park for most meetings and my estimate is they bring $50,000 into the Warwick economy each time.
"I expect a large crowd will come to Warwick for the superbikes, many will ride their bikes to Warwick to watch the racing.”
The superbike round was preceded by two testing days last week and attracted drivers from as far as Perth and New Zealand.
Due to the Leyburn Sprints and polocrosse on the nearby fields, there will be no motor racing this weekend at Morgan Park.
As well as a major update of the 3.1km track this year, the club has recently repaired the original track which will be in use for more short circuit racing.
