Hazards hang on for victory

A BRILLIANT third quarter was the difference as Hazards beat The Darkside 42-36 in the A-grade grand final on Monday night at WIRAC.

With Queensland underage representative Stephanie O'Brien in the line-up, Hazards were favourites but trailed 8-7 at the first break.

Hazards led 19-18 at half-time and 23-18 four minutes into the third quarter after a long shot from Stephanie.

Trailing 34-24 at three-quarter time, The Darkside reduced the margin to four, 39-35, with five minutes to go.

Hazards captain Jess O'Brien said she expected a tougher game than the semi, with the return of one of their shooters.

"Ashlee Hagan did really well for us in defence. Stephanie also played well," Jess said.

The Darkside player Mandy Creed said her side was happy to stay with Hazards.

"It was always Stephanie we had to shut down and defenders Helena Fraser and Mandy Rutledge did well."

In B-grade, Firechicks, the Warwick 15 years team, scored their first win against Grenades, the 14 years team, 25-22, in a cliffhanger.

Defender Kim Thorne said Firechicks came together well as a team.

"Coach Karen Vogler has been away for a fortnight so we wanted to do her proud," Thorne said.

Grenades captain Hayley Millard said Firechicks played well.

"We are happy they did well and look forward to the next game," Millard said.
