Warwick man behind bars for vicious head stomping

A WARWICK man is behind bars awaiting sentencing for a vicious head stomping that left a man unconscious for about 20 minutes.

Darren Andrew Bradley appeared in Warwick Magistrates Court on his 41st birthday last Thursday, where he pleaded guilty to eight charges, including assault occasioning bodily harm.

CCTV footage aired in the courtroom showed Bradley's brother and another man involved in a wrestling match behind the Stockyard Hotel.

After a few minutes, bystanders are seen to appear and pull the men away from each other.

At the same time, Bradley is seen exiting the hotel before approaching the other man, who is still on the ground, and stomping on his head.

Audible gasps were heard in the courtroom as the footage was played and the victim is seen to immediately curl up and roll away from his attacker.

Bradley immediately turns around and retreats to the inside of the hotel.

The other man suffered serious mouth injuries as a result of the attack and now requires about $2600 in dental work.

It is understood he was also unconscious for up to 20 minutes following the brutal attack.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey said he required time to research sentencing options and ordered Bradley be taken into custody in the meantime.

"I need time to consider these authorities. This is concerning, the video is compelling and...my approach to assaults in and around public places, and in particular at licensed premises, has been consistent in relation to prison and actual time," he said.

"It is no different here - the only difference is this is quite serious.

"It's appalling and it's conduct that will bring a significant period of imprisonment."

Defence solicitor Bonnie O'Brien said her client "fully acknowledges the force was excessive in the circumstances".

She added that Bradley was remorseful and admitted guilt once the CCTV footage jogged his "somewhat hazy recollection" of the events.

Mr Manthey is expected to deliver his sentence in the court tomorrow.
