THE Toowoomba community has reacted with grief to the death of six-year-old Kingsthorpe girl Mia Quinnell in a Warrego Hwy crash.

Mia died in Toowoomba Hospital after the car she was travelling in with her family hit a kangaroo at 3am on Sunday at Zimm's Corner.

Her parents Kylie Bauer, 31, and Daniel Quinnell, 32, and Mia's sister Nikita, 8, were treated for minor injuries sustained in the crash.

The family was driving west on the Warrego Hwy when the kangaroo bounded across the car's path, smashing through the windscreen.

The six-year-old was described as a 'lovable' girl with a cheeky spirit who loved animals.

Mia's parents have decided to donate four of the young girl's organs in hope that they can save others.

A spokesman for Education Queensland's regional office said counselling was being offered to anyone at Fairview Heights State School - Mia's school - for as long as they required it.

Messages of support were sent from many members of the community on Facebook.

EARLY MORNING TRAGEDY: Girl, 6, dies in collision with kangaroo

"Thoughts are with the family," one message said.

"Freak accidents can happen to anyone. Make sure those around you know they are loved."

"May all her family have strength to carry on," another message said.

"Keep her memories close in your heart... such a sad loss to you all."

RACQ manager for technical and safety policy Steve Spalding said collisions between motor vehicles and animals were often "unavoidable".

"It's fair to assume that with the ongoing drier weather, you may well see more kangaroos and livestock out near the edges of the road," he said.

"It is difficult to prevent an animal strike if the animal is moving in an irregular or unpredictable fashion, and sometimes it is simply unavoidable.

"We are always mindful of advising motorists not to make drastic or severe manoeuvres if it puts them in danger or another vehicle."

The police's forensic crash unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
