Heat is on for newest firies

FIREFIGHTING recruits have ignited a new career as they began training to enter the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services at Warwick Fire Station on Saturday morning.

Instructors Lieutenant Chris Gilchrist from Warwick and Captain Peter McKenzie from Clifton have come on board to train the six fledgling firefighters during the next four weekends.

"This is intense training," Lt Gilchrist said.

"We'll be starting this weekend with the health and safety aspects, they're the most important," he said.

"Then tomorrow we'll be out on the drill grounds learning how to climb ladders, carry hoses and things like that."

Lt Gilchrist said at the end of this block of awareness training the recruits would then have to complete a full course of hands-on training in Warwick in the coming months.

"Throughout their training they'll be taught awareness, hazmat and road crash rescue," he said.

"We'll also have a rural officer come in and teach them how to respond to wild fire."

With firefighters in demand, Lt Gilchrist said fire stations are always looking for more people to join.
