Help for jilted Dick Smith gift card holders
THE decision by receivers not to honour gift cards has been met with anger, with the Queensland Opposition slamming the decision.
Coles and Woolworths supermarkets, which also sold the gift cards prior to the receivers' appointment, have written to administrators urging them to honour the gift cards.
Shadow Attorney-General Ian Walker said Dick Smith going into voluntary administration was unhappy news for many Queenslanders.
"In the two weeks since Christmas, many people who received gift cards as presents wouldn't have been able to redeem them yet," Mr Walker said.
"These cards were purchased in good faith, and Queenslanders should get a fair chance to use them.
"In the spirit of Christmas and a New Year, Dick Smith's administrators should do the right thing by Queenslanders and allow them to use the store credit they are entitled to."
Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg shared Mr Walker's opinion.
"It is the right thing to do, in my opinion, to honour those vouchers. It's the least that can be done," he said.
In a win for some customers, Big W, Coles and Woolworths supermarkets have agreed to honour Dick Smith gift cards in some instances.
A spokesman for Woolworths said customers who purchased the gift cards from Woolworths or Big W stores would be able to exchange the unredeemed value for a Woolworths WISH gift card, which can be used at participating stores across the Woolworths group.
The exchange could be completed by filling out a redemption form until March 7 this year, with forms available online or by phoning 1300 767 969.
A spokeswoman for Coles said although Coles had already passed on the sale proceeds from the gift cards to Dick Smith, they would exchange unredeemed gift cards purchased at Coles.
"As a gesture of goodwill to our customers, we will exchange valid, unredeemed Dick Smith Electronics gift cards purchased at Coles from July 1 last year for Coles gift cards of equal value," she said.
To take up this offer, Coles customers are asked to phone 1800 061 562 or visit http://www.coles.com.au to obtain a redemption form.
Customers could then post the completed form, along with the unredeemed Dick Smith Electronics gift cards and proof of purchase, to the Coles Store Support Centre by February 29.
According to their website, online retailer Kogan.com is offering a $25 voucher to customers who post in their Dick Smith gift card. The voucher is limited to one per customer, with terms and conditions available on their website.
