Become a real prime mover, mover in Yangan

YANGAN'S main street will become a place of legend again this weekend.

Mere mortals will prove their worth by using sheer strength to drag a massive prime mover to glory.

So far, five teams of Southern Downs residents will pit their might against a Frasers Livestock truck at the annual Yangan Truck Pull on Sunday.

The Yangan and District Progress Association is throwing out the challenge for teams to show their muscle at the annual truck pull. Teams of eight for men and 10 for women will vie for a spot on the perpetual trophy, which stands proudly on display for all to see at the Yangan Hotel.

Individual trophies will also be awarded to the members of the winning teams.

Progress Association president Colin Pope said the truck was chocked at the back and had two ropes attached to the front.

"There are four men per rope and the women's teams have five women per rope," he said.

"The truck is placed in neutral and the driver remains inside.

"The team must pull the truck to a marker, approximately 35m away, and the team to do so the quickest is the winner."

This major community fundraiser began in 2010 and in the past, money has gone toward charities such as Cancer Council and CareFlight.

A history board and sandstone welcome signs at either end of town have also been funded by the event.

Mr Pope said they were expecting a big crowd this year and were hoping to raise several thousand dollars this year.

"Funds raised this time will go towards tennis courts and to BUSHkids," he said.

"It's a great family day out.

"There will be a kids' ute pull, sausage sizzle and a multi-draw raffle."

Teams of 10 children aged between 12 and 16 years old will try their strength against a ute.

The kids' ute pull will be $3 a contestant, and the truck pull is $5.

DJ Vince will be spinning the decks.

The day kicks off at 11am going through until late afternoon at the Yangan Hotel, with truck pulling action from 12.30pm.

To enter a team, phone Colin Pope on 0412 156 099 or 4664 8555.
