Killarney Heritage Centre's desperate bid to save artefacts

KILLARNEY Heritage Centre is desperately seeking help to save its historical artefacts.

The current premises are at risk of flooding from the nearby Condamine River.

The Killarney Heritage Association has an opportunity to relocate to the heritage-listed former Commercial Bank premises, further north in Willow St, if funding allows.

At the moment, the centre is unable to grow, as locals are reluctant to donate historical treasures because they fear losing them in another flood.

President Tony Pearson wants to know what the community would like to see happen.

"We don't want to give up, we just want the town's support," Mr Pearson said.

Funding is the biggest issue the centre faces, with relocation costs likely to cause major damage to their budget.

The weekly rent for the new building would be $200, compared to the $25 the group pays currently.

Although the dedicated volunteers managed to pull 1500 visitors through the door this financial year, compared to 234 in 2013, it still doesn't cover the costs of relocating.

The committee hosts tours to help bring in cash, taking visitors on sawmill tours and trips to Queen Mary Falls.

"But it's still not enough grace to make us feel comfortable in doing it on our own."

Mr Pearson is hoping for more support from the Southern Downs Regional Council.

"Killarney is always forgotten about," he said.

"We never ask the council for anything, we've done it all ourselves."

There will be a meeting held at the former Commercial Bank, on Willow St, at 2pm on Saturday, June 27, to discuss relocation and the future of the association.

The council CEO, all councillors, the public and interested parties are asked to attend.
