Heroic rescuer honoured two years after death
TWO years after his death Simon Bolitho has been honoured with a district officer certificate from Queensland Police Services for his integral assistance in locating a man who went missing at Queen Mary Falls.
In 2015 a Brisbane man, who was a wheelchair user, lost control of his vehicle and crashed down a 10-metre embankment.
Killarney Sergeant Brad Doyle approached Mr Bolitho for assistance when the search began, as he was the closest permanent resident in the search area and had worked with rural fire services.
Mr Bolitho made the critical suggestion that the search party stay on foot, as the trees and bushes obstructed the view for vehicles and helicopters.
A kilometre into the search, it was Simon who spotted the missing man's vehicle through the trees.
Suffering two broken legs and enduring a night of freezing conditions, the man was then able to be saved by Queensland Fire and Rescue Services.
At the QPS Awards Presentations in Warwick on Wednesday, Mr Bolitho's son Peter accepted the award on behalf of his father.
"I'm very proud of my dad and he was certainly happy he helped find the missing man," he said.
Sgt Doyle commended Mr Bolitho's assistance.
"Without Simon's help we could have been searching for a lot longer," he said.
Inspector Brian Cannon said Mr Bolitho offered great service to the community.
"Through his actions assisting the police force Simon Bolitho has furthermore serviced the community," he said.
The award ceremony recognised years of service and professionalism displayed by the Warwick Patrol Group and members of the community.
