He's a winner in Warwick, now he holds the record
RODEO: A cowboy who has starred for the past four years at the Warwick Rodeo has set a new record score in saddle bronc in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.
Pierce hails from Tooma in New South Wales and rode Cheyenne Top Girl to a win at the recent Narrandera Rodeo in New South Wales to score 93, only the second 93 in any rough stock event in APRA history.
He is a second generation rodeo rider who retired from bull riding to concentrate on saddle bronc.
Pierce broke the saddle bronc record on a horse owned by Lurg, Victoria, contractor Garry McPhee.
The previous record was set by Bruce O'Dell at Heathcote in New South Wales in 2006 on another McPhee horse, QT, at 92.
New South Wales rider Cody Angland equalled the record of 92 in 2010 at Myrtleford in Victoria on John P Gill's horse Paper Rock.
Pierce has starred each October at the Warwick Showgrounds for the past four years.
He won the aggregate and title in the Warwick Rodeo APRA National Finals in 2015 and 2017.
Pierce was second in the aggregate in 2014 before the national finals moved to Warwick and second in the aggregate in the national finals in 2016.
This weekend, there are APRA rodeo from Friday to Sunday on the Victorian long weekend at Kyabram, Merrijig and Chiltern.
Warwick cowboy Michael Maher won three successive saddle bronc rides at the Mt Isa Rodeo in 2014-2016 and will be one of the riders keen to push Pierce for the top prizemoney this weekend.
