Hi ho silver for West duo

AFTER winning silver medals in the Queensland Primary Schools Athetics Championships, Zac Caterson and Ben Lyons are continuing their training under their dads in preparation for their first nationals.

The pair are the first students from Warwick West State School for eight years to qualify for national competition in athletics.

Zac and Ben won silver medals at the state championships and are among a group of eight athletes from Darling Downs in the Queensland team for next month's nationals in Brisbane.

After winning silver at the Darling Downs championships in 11-years discus with a throw of 33.7m, Zac improved his personal best to 35.5m at the state championships to secure silver.

"This was my first time for Darling Downs," he said.

"I am coached by my dad and also receive help from Warwick High teacher Nathan Rogers."

Ben leapt 1.36m in the 10-years high jump at both Darling Downs and state championships to win gold at the regionals and silver in the state championships.

"I am aiming to jump 1.42m by the time of the nationals."

"Dad trains me in the back yard at home ... we have some mats for high jump."

As dads, Paul Caterson and Rob Lyons can take a bow for supporting two boys to national level athletics.

Ben is no stranger to state championships. He won high jump at last season's state little athletics championships with 1.23m, .13 under his leap this year.
