High praise for Warwick athlete after world appointment

ATHLETICS: Warwick athlete Carlee Beattie has been appointed to the World Para Athletics Athletes Advisory Committee.

Long jumper Beattie, who has won six international medals, was nominated by Athletics Australia and the Australian Paralympic Committee for the world role.

The 34-year-old, who was born without part of her left arm, is one of three Asia/Oceania athletes on the board, with three athletes from Europe and one from the US.

Athletics Australia Paralympics program manager Andrew Faichney said Beattie was a fantastic athlete who had moved into sports administration with the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games organising committee.

"She is respected not only due to her results but as a friendly and supportive team member who shows an interest in athletes away from her own events,” Faichney said.

He said the decisions of the athletes group would feed into World Paralympic Athletics Management and Technical committees.

Warwick physiotherapist Peter Wallace was an assistant coach for the Australian team at the 2004 Paralympic in Athens and recalls watching Beattie in hockey, netball and athletics when both were at Warwick State High School.

"I encouraged her to aim for a Paralympics team and recalled asking for her long jump distance in year 12 at Warwick High and it was nearly good enough for what was the qualifying distance for the 2004 Paralympics,” Mr Wallace said.

"This is a major appointment for Carlee.

"She is well respected in the sport and gets on well with everyone.

"They have needed an athletes group for a while. Paralympic sport is getting more and more media coverage.”

Her father Rob Beattie said he could not be more proud of his daughter.

"I was speechless when I was told of her appointment. I am just blown away,” he said.

Beattie missed the chance to defend her world championship long jump gold medal in London this year after breaking her leg at training in Brisbane in March.

She has just returned to the gym.
