High school athletics record broken after 42 years
A RECORD set 42 years ago was broken at the Warwick State High School Athletics Carnival on Friday at Hamilton Oval.
Bryanna McGowan ran 13.58 seconds for the 13 years 100m to beat the record set in 1973 by Sharon Thompson at 13.6.
National silver medallist Zac Caterson set three new records in the 13 years age group, javelin, discus and shot put.
Kurt Goodwin was a national medallist while at Warwick High in the 1990s and lost two of his records to Caterson at this year's carnival.
Caterson showed his class in shot put bettering the record set at 12.37m in 2009 by Ty Gardner with a new mark of 15.61m.
Brendan Hoffman (discus and shot), Sophie Follett (800m, 1500m) and Nat Webb (100m, 200m) each set two records.
Lily Maw (javelin) and Justyn Rogers (100m hurdles) also broke records.
Aimee Van Der Hulst set a new record in the 17 years and over high jump with a leap of 1.6m beating the mark set in 1999 at 1.55m by Carlee Beattie.
Beattie has gone on to medal at the Paralympics in a different event, long jump.
Van Der Hulst scored the most points of the carnival, 92, to win the W Nielsen Memorial Trophy for outstanding athlete of the meet.
The open boys 1500m trophy was won by Australian orienteering representative Simeon Burrill.
Ashlee Higgins won the Matron Giles Cup for junior girls aggregate with 91 points and Justyn Rogers was Neale Holmes Cup junior boy's winner with 88 points.
Max Rubie won the F.R.Welburn Memorial Cup with 73 points for senior boys champion.
Leslie House won the relays and aggregate trophies at the sports and made it a clean sweep winning the Spirit Award.
The Walk Participation Cup was shared by Cunningham and Hamilton with 49 points.
The Warwick State High School will be represented at the Warwick All Schools Sports on August 13 where students can aim to make the district team to compete in the Darling Downs titles.
Athletes will then have the chance at the Darling Downs championships to secure a position in the regional team to compete at this year's state championships in October.
