COMMENT: Highway carnage has to be stopped

ANOTHER day, another shocking crash on the region's roads.

It seems like every other day we are reporting on crashes across the Southern Downs.

What is happening?

Yesterday's crash is one of the worst we have seen in a while.

A school bus filled with children is a frightening crash scenario and I know there will be many Warwick parents counting their blessings this morning at having their children home safe.

The driver of the ute involved was unfortunately not as lucky and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

While this story is deeply upsetting, it is one that is becoming far too familiar.

It is time we stop and assess what is happening to cause such carnage on the highways.

Whether a crash is caused by driver error, road conditions, inadequate signage, or any other multitude of reasons, one thing is clear: we need to do more to stop it.

People are always going to make mistakes on the road but that isn't a reason for us to throw our hands up in the air and say, "Oh well, it's the drivers' fault".

Yesterday's crash was tragic enough in that it left one person battling for life.

It could have just as easily been 40 people.

It's our duty to step up and prevent more injury and death.
