Hinze wins eighth title but a long way to go to record 17
GOLF: Sam Hinze has won eight successive ladies A-grade championships in Warwick golf but hasn’t a target for the number of titles she is eyeing off.
Hinze has the record for most successive championships but is a long way from the most overall, 17, a record held by Joyce Horgan, mother of current member Lyn Gibson.
She said the course was playing beautifully.
“The greens are fast, I was hitting my putts a bit too far,” she said.
She doesn’t have a preference for the front or back nines on the Warwick course, hitting her best nine hole championship scores of two over on each half of the course on the first weekend.
After losing in a playoff last year, Shane McKenzie made sure of a win this year finishing eight shots ahead of Neil Glen who was the early men’s A-grade leader.
McKenzie moved from the Sunshine Coast two years ago after being a trainee golf professional at the Headland Golf Club.
He finished with 300 after hitting 75 in each round.
“It was almost impossible at the weekend with the strong wind so I was happy with two scores of 75 in the final two rounds,” McKenzie said.
“I play once a week, my game is improving, especially my drives. I was keen to win this title.”
