Hire plan for council-owned park space backfires for SDRC

THE Southern Downs Regional Council's plan to raise some extra money by charging residents to hire council-owned park space has backfired, with the scheme causing anger among a number of residents.

As of July 31 last year people wishing to hire parks for functions such as weddings, markets, sausage sizzles or other fundraisers had to pay the council $185.

Previously there had been no fee at all, although Lockyer Valley Regional Council charged just $50 and Toowoomba $90.

Since its introduction the fee brought in just over $3000.

It was a unanimous decision among councillors to remove the fee and review the system during the upcoming budget process.

People looking to use council-owned park space for private functions still have to book the space through council ahead of time by calling 1300 697 372.
