Historic weekend for Dean Amos at Leyburn

MOTOR SPORT: Dean Amos created history at the Historic Leyburn Sprints at the weekend, and indicated that he is after more accolades at the track.

Amos broke the track record in his sixth run on Saturday, giving him his fourth consecutive outright title in the process.

He shaved almost two seconds off his previous track record this time around. The win gives him five wins in a row next year, as he inches his way closer to Ray Vandersee's record of six titles.

Another goal of Amos is to become the first person to break through the magical 40-second mark.

"I had a gear selection problem on the last run, but this is only a new car for me and there's more speed to come, so I'll be back next year for another crack,” Amos said.

This was Amos' first time driving the 650 horsepower V8 Gould.

Time for this year's Sprints were hot, with second-placed Michael Von Rappard also breaking Amos' previous race record.

The fastest historical car across the weekend came from David Cross, who recorded a time of 49.6992 seconds in his 1976 Bowin Hay P6 V8.

Sprints president Tricia Chant was delighted with the event.

"The 2017 Sprints attendance was virtually the same as in 2016,” Chant said.

"We're very happy with this number, considering the blustery weather made for cold outdoor conditions on Saturday.

"Our spectators enjoyed great entertainment on and off-track on both days and the various market traders and food outlets did solid business.

"We look forward to another successful Historic Leyburn Sprints in 2018.”
