History and tradition flying into the Downs

THE Clifton Airfield has a special significance for Trevor Bange.

It is a place he has grown up on since 1947, as his family to this day continues a rich legacy.

Currently serving as the Lone Eagle Flying School's chief flying instructor, said the history of the airfield held a substantial importance.

"The flying school was formed in 2002, and the whole of the airfield was developed as flying training for recreational aircraft,” Mr Bange said.

"The fly-in started in 1082 in recognition of the primary glider my father built in 1932, and had its first flight in March of that year.

"It's great that we've still got that original glider. I've flown it and my son has flown it. My son wants to continue, and it's a great thing to be able to honour that type of concept.

"We would like to continue legacy of aviation in the local area.”

Since the inaugural run in 1982, the Clifton Fly-In has developed from having half a dozen aircraft, to over 120.

Enthusiasts from Cessnock and Newcastle will be making the trip to the Darling Downs, as will visitors from Scotland.

In line with International Women in Aviation Week, Mr Bange said the opportunity would be given for them to experience the aircraft first-hand.

"Women and girls who haven't flown an aircraft before can experience flying around on the day,” he said.

"People can also come down to have a look at the aircraft and talk to the pilots.”

Aircraft will be arriving on the day from 6am, with breakfast and a barbecue lunch available.

All profits will go towards a training scholarship for those aged 15-21.
