Sevens hits off hockey season

THE Condamine Sports Club Sevens will officially start the Warwick Hockey Association winter season this weekend.

Last year, a successful men’s sevens competition was held but the format is now mixed.

Sevens organiser Phil Rolfe said while every player on the field could be a woman, at least one woman must be on the field at all times.

“The teams had enough women for us to make it mixed this year,” Rolfe said.

Warwick teams nominated include Wyverns, Saints and Wombats, a combination of players from Harlequins and Corinthians.

Former Southern Downs resident John Lamb will play in one of the two Sunshine Coast teams and former Warwick hockey player Brian Blacka will play with Ipswich this weekend.

Games will be played from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and 9am to mid afternoon on Sunday. There are vacancies for players in Warwick teams and anyone interested can call Rolfe on 0403 402 594.

This weekend’s Sevens are a forerunner to the state women’s veterans championships, which will be held on six fields at Queen’s Park on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
