Hockey player hits high note

WARWICK under-13 hockey player Matt Eastwell won the player of the tournament for division two at the state championships in Rockhampton last week.

After winning three of its games on the first two days of the carnival, Warwick finished equal third with five wins, three losses and a draw.

In the division two semi-final, Warwick went down 2-1 to Brisbane 3. Warwick led 1-0 at halftime before conceding two goals early in the second half.

In the play-off for third, Warwick drew 1-all with Mackay 2. Warwick had a goal disallowed seven minutes from fulltime.

During the carnival, Warwick lost twice to Brisbane 3 and once to Mackay 2.

One of the best Warwick wins was the 4-1 victory against a Townsville 2 side which made the division 2 final.

Coach Phil Rolfe said the Warwick effort was outstanding considering fielding a team which had seven players young enough to play in the next two under-13 championships.

“The reason for taking the boys to Rockhampton was to learn what it was like to play at state level,” Rolfe said.

“It says a lot about the ability of Matt Eastwell to win the player of the under-13 tournament in his division in a field of 112 at the age of 10.

“All the players performed above expectations.”

There was plenty of goal-scoring by Warwick in the carnival with Tom Mikkelsen scoring six goals and Ryan Collins five.

Mikkelsen hit a treble against Gladstone and Collins three goals in the win against Rockhampton 2.

Rockhampton won division 1 which also included Brisbane 1.
