Hockey players off to state champs
DESPITE their facilities being devastated by flooding six months ago, the youth of Warwick hockey has risen to the occasion to snare the most regional spots in the past 15 years.
Five players have made Darling Downs primary school under-12 teams to play in state championships starting today in Mackay.
Past Warwick junior hockey co-ordinator Gary Millard said the representation was the association’s best for 15 years.
Matt Eastwell (St Mary’s), Josh Jensen (Scots PGC) and Jacob Reid (Warwick East) have all made the boys regional team for the second year running.
In 2010, they played in the state championships in Toowoomba where their side finished third.
Matt and Jacob play in the halves or as inside forwards while Josh is a specialist half.
Jacob is Darling Downs vice captain and said there was a chance the three Warwick players could play together in the halves at times during the championships.
Matt said he expects the experience of playing on grass in 2011 due to not having a synthetic field could help.
“Six of our games in Mackay will be on grass and three on synthetic,” he said.
Claudia Ready (Warwick East) and Larissa Millard (St Mary’s) have both made the Darling Downs primary school girls side. Claudia plays in her first state championships in any sport today.
Larissa made three regional swimming teams and a netball team prior to this year and was selected in Darling Downs hockey and netball teams this season but the championships overlap so she opted for a second netball carnival.
For Matt, Josh and Claudia, the trip to Mackay is their first.
