Hockey surface 'devastating'

REBECCA Wright was flood bound yesterday but she was devastated by the photos she has seen of the synthetic hockey surface.

The Warwick Hockey Association secretary said the damage from the flood on Tuesday night was much greater than anyone expected.

“It virtually rolled up the surface and caused major damage to the underlay,” Wright said.

While the hockey committee was still to meet, she said the damage put a lot of plans for 2011 in jeopardy.

There was already major damage to the surface after the first flood and officials were waiting for the experts to inspect the field.

Now the damage was many times worse.

Wright said there would be no night hockey in the immediate future as the only lights were on the synthetic field.

Warwick was in danger of losing the state men's veterans' carnival midyear due to the flood damage to the main field.
