Hockey team upbeat after trip to Warwick

HOCKEY: After two runner-up finishes in the national masters over 40s hockey championships, Queensland over 40s No.1 team manager Ian Edwards is hoping a training weekend in Warwick will boost the team's chances of going one better.

The team which travelled to Warwick at the weekend included four players heading to Barcelona, Spain, for this year's World Cup.

Warwick pair Adam Byrne (Over 35s) and Rob Pohlman (Over 60s) are also in Australian teams to play in Barcelona.

"They have very good facilities in Warwick and put on great country hospitality,” Edwards said.

"The hockey association put on Saturday night dinner for our team and the Warwick team we played in two games at the weekend.”

Gary Porteous is coach for a fifth year and Australian over 45s coach for the World Cup.

"We are very grateful to the two umpires, Alan Balfour and Greg McDonald, who officiated in both games,” he said.

This year's nationals are in Lismore and Ballina in northern New South Wales at the end of September and early October.

In Warwick club fixtures, Wyverns will play Corinthians in men's and ladies' games on Thursday night with Saints and Harlequins playing Friday night.

Round 3 of the Super League will be played Saturday, the last of the season.
