Hockey teams support Brett Forte Fund at weekend

HOCKEY: There was something more important than the hockey at the weekend Condy Vets Nines Carnival at Queens Park - it was the chance to support the Brett Forte Remembrance Fund.

The SFTS team included Chris and Luke Forte, brothers of late Toowoomba police officer Brett Forte. A large contingent of Forte family members were at the hockey weekend.

The winners Hugh Jass gave $500 of their winning $800 prizemoney to the Brett Forte Remembrance Fund and runners up SFTS gave their $200 prizemoney to the fund.

Chris and Luke Forte are regulars in the Warwick over 35 years team at state championship level but missed last year's championships which were played in the same week that their brother was tragically killed while on duty as a police officer.

Warwick Hockey Association president Sheryl Windle said it was great to have a large contingent of Forte family members, including the parents of Brett, Chris and Luke at the carnival.

"There was a lot of positive feedback about the weekend and we are planning a bigger carnival in 2019,” she said.

Winners went camping

CAMPING and winning must go hand in hand, the Hugh Jass team from Toowoomba won its third successive Condy Vets Nines hockey carnival at the weekend.

Each time, they have camped the two nights at Leslie Dam.

"We sleep in tents and swags at Leslie Dam and have one caravan,” team co-organiser Steve Hawthorne said.

In the final, Hugh Jass won 5-3 from SFTS, the team from Redlands which has developed a team name from the words short, fat, tall and skiny.

Melinda Baker scored all three goals for SFTS in the final.

Hawthorne rated former Warwick player Grant Windle and Warwick masters player Dave Carlson as the best for Hugh Jass but made special mention of the top performances of the four women in the team, Jane Roper, Misty Rowe, Ash Toulson and Melinda Carlson.

Sass Fitters from Brisbane came third and Warwick teams Hackers fourth.
