Hockey women target Newtown

THE Warwick women's hockey team will be aiming to retain its top-two spot in Toowoomba A3 hockey when it plays Newtown at 9.30am on Sunday.

Warwick beat Past High 5-2 last Sunday with Lisa Hemmings scoring her first goal in the Toowoomba competition.

Megan Neal, Shannon Armbruster and Lauren Eastwell were the other scorers in a game where Armbruster set up many attacking opportunities from centre half.

Jane Roper, Tamara Hawks and Rachael Inmon were the best in defence for Warwick.

With only six competition games left, Warwick is in the top two and odds-on to make the semi-finals.

Team co-ordinator Toni Cox said the team had played above expectations this season after going to Toowoomba

“We were hoping to improve our skills during the season to make the Warwick competition stronger when we are able to play synthetic hockey again (in Warwick).”

Cox and Armbruster, and past Warwick player Kylie Hollist, who now lives in Toowoomba, are in the Toowoomba 1 over-35s representative team to play in the state championships in Rockhampton on the last weekend of July.

Toowoomba is taking three teams to the championships. Kerrie Fitch and Jane Roper were also approached to play for Toowoomba in one of the three teams.

Cox plays hockey three times a week in Toowoomba to improve her play and felt it was all worthwhile after making the number one Toowoomba side.

“It helps playing with the Warwick A2 men's team as that is the standard at state level,” she said.

Most of the players from the Warwick A3 women's team played for Warwick in the recent state open championships in Brisbane.

Warwick came up against teams from Brisbane, Mackay, Ipswich 1 and Ipswich 2, and Gladstone.

Half of the team were eligible to play veterans hockey so were happy to mix it well with players from the rest of the state.

Two Ipswich players also lined up for Warwick.

Cox said the state championships boosted the fitness of the Warwick team for the rest of the season.
